Le mont Tombe est l'ancien nom du mont Saint-Michel, avant que Charlemagne ne choisisse saint Michel pour protecteur de son empire au IXe siècle. Le nouveau nom complet était Mont-Saint-Michel-au-péril-de-la-Mer.Ce choix viendrait d'un petit oratoire en forme de grotte construit en 708 par saint Aubert, évêque d'Avranches, dédié à l'archange saint Michel. Les restes de cet oratoire ont été retrouvés et sont encore visibles dans la chapelle Notre-Dame-Sous-Terre, c’est-à-dire sous la nef de l’abbatiale.
