Il Massiccio del Gennargentu - il cui nome in lingua sarda significa La porta dell'argento - è un'area montuosa di grande estensione situata nella zona centro-orientale della Sardegna, in provincia di Nuoro, comprendente le cime più elevate dell'isola. Geologicamente è un'antica formazione rocciosa, caratterizzata da montagne di altezza moderata e con vette a profilo rotondeggiante: tra le tipologie di roccia maggiormente rappresentate nell'area vi sono scisti, graniti e rocce calcaree. La particolarità dell'ambiente e la presenza di specie endemiche, sia animali sia vegetali, hanno portato all'iscrizione della regione montuosa tra le zone di protezione speciale incluse nella rete Natura 2000.
