Onmiddellijk denk je aan 'leugenaar' doch dit is niet de reden waarom deze toren die naam kreeg. Het is een verdedigingstoren uit de 14de eeuw waarop ze op uitkijk stonden. 'Leugheren' betekende 'uitkijken' en zo is die naam ontstaan. Er doen allerlei verhalen de ronde over de functie van deze toren die verwijst naar zijn naam. Een hardnekkig verhaal is dat de toren zou gebruikt zijn om de schepen te misleiden en op land te doen stranden. De toren heeft een nu een lichtbaken en is niet toegankelijk voor een bezoek.
