De telegraaf werd in 1837 uitgevonden en gepatenteerd door Charles Wheatstone en Fothergill Cook . Cooke en Wheatstone bouwden een vijf-naaldstelegraaf en lieten in september 1837 zien hoe dit kon werken. Cooke en Wheatstone demonstreerden een elektrische telegraaf in Londen tussen het treinstation van Euston en Camden, ongeveer anderhalve kilometer verderop. Tijdens deze wandeling kunt u ongeveer het traject van de eerste telegraafberichten volgen. Een paar naalden wezen beurtelings naar elke letter en berichten konden gemakkelijk worden gelezen zonder kennis van een code. De demo vond plaats op 25 juli 1837.
