De tombe was voor Marcus Vergilius Eurysaces, een rijke bakker, die rond 30 v.Chr. overleed. Eurysaces was een vrijgemaakte slaaf en had na zijn vrijlating zijn bedrijfje opgestart. Hij leverde mogelijk zijn brood aan het Romeinse leger of aan de senaat die het weer uitdeelde aan het volk. Zo werd Eurysaces een rijk man. Ter herinnering aan zijn leven en werk liet hij de tombe bouwen, waarop hij de werkzaamheden in zijn bakkerij liet afbeelden.
