Na veel verzet door de Erfgooiers gaf in 1634 de landsregering toestemming om een stuk grond in het Gooi te ontginnen. Een rechthoekig stuk grond werd opgedeeld in langwerpige kavels en verkocht aan rijke Amsterdammers. In het begin werden de gronden gebruikt voor de landbouw. Maar al snel verrezen er zomerhuizen. Uiteindelijk werden het buitenplaatsen met permanente bewoning.
