Die Saane entspringt oberhalb von Gsteig am Sanetschhorn unterhalb des Col du Sénin als La Sarine, fliesst nach Norden nach Gstaad und weiter zur Gemeinde Saanen, die nach dem Fluss benannt wurde. Sie fliesst Richtung Westen durch das Pays d’Enhaut, ehe sie sich bei Montbovon wieder nach Norden wendet. Sie fliesst durch das Haute Gruyère in den Stausee Greyerzersee. Von dort verläuft sie weiter nach Norden bis Freiburg, dann nach Nordosten durch den Schiffenensee , bis sie westlich von Bern in die Aare mündet.
Die Saane floss vor rund 150 Jahren noch grösstenteils wild innerhalb von Molasse-Schluchten und durchquerte zahlreiche Auengebiete. Um Flächen für die Landwirtschaft zu gewinnen und den Schutz vor Hochwasser zu verbessern, wurde sie kanalisiert. Ausserdem errichtete man sechs Staudämme, um die Wasserkraft zu nutzen.
