Het kanaal Roeselare-Leie was in het begin van de twintigste eeuw de slagader van de lokale industrie. Die industrie had zwaar te lijden onder de bezetting. De Duitsers haalden een groot deel van de machines en het materiaal weg en veel bedrijven werden vernield tijdens bombardementen. Toch gonsde het nog steeds van bedrijvigheid tijdens de bezetting. Het kanaal werd immers volop ingepast in de oorlogseconomie.
