Viena és la capital d'Àustria, alhora que un dels seus nou estats federats . Està situada a l'est de l'estat, prop de la frontera amb Eslovàquia, als marges del riu Danubi. Està envoltada per l'estat federat de Baixa Àustria. Amb una població d'1.935.000 habitants , Viena és la ciutat més gran, centre cultural i polític d'Àustria. L'àrea metropolitana té 2,4 milions d'habitants, població similar a la de la ciutat el 1914. La llengua oficial n'és l'alemany.
