Aquesta disposició amb 2 piques va ser habitual a partir del segle XVIII, quan va sorgir la necessitat de rentar els llençols més de dues vegades a l'any a causa de les majors exigències d'higiene . El recipient inferior era per ensabonar , el superior per esbandir.
Els animals també van venir a beure del bol superior, de manera que en realitat es tracta d'una combinació d'aigua potable i bol de rentat.
