La cova va estar habitada a la fi del període prehistòric , entre aproximadament 12.000 i 17.000 a. C. , per caçadors-recol·lectors de la cultura magdaleniense .
Es tracta d'una gran cova de pedra calcària d'uns 20 m de llargada, 6 m d'amplada i 12 m d'alçada , un impressionant espai natural format per l'erosió del Lesse.
Les troballes arqueològiques inclouen eines de sílex i restes òssies d'animals i humanes.
El nom fa referència als Nutones , petites criatures del folklore de les Ardenes, que es creu que habiten en coves. Se'ls compara amb petits esperits de la terra o nimfes del bosc. Ajudaven amb les artesanies a la nit a canvi de menjar.
