De grot was bewoond in de late prehistorie, tussen circa 12.000 en 17.000 v.Chr., door jagers-verzamelaars uit de Magdalénien-cultuur.
Het is een grote kalksteengrot van circa 20 m lang, 6 m breed en 12 m hoog — een indrukwekkende natuurlijke ruimte gevormd door erosie van de Lesse.
Archeologische vondsten omvatten silexwerktuigen, dierlijke en menselijke botresten.
De naam verwijst naar de Nutons, kleine wezens uit het Ardense volksgeloof, die men geloofde in grotten te vinden. Ze worden vergeleken met kleine aardgeesten of bosnimfen.. Ze zouden ’s nachts helpen met ambachtelijke klusjes in ruil voor voedsel.
