La cueva estuvo habitada a finales del período prehistórico , entre aproximadamente 12.000 y 17.000 a. C. , por cazadores-recolectores de la cultura magdaleniense .
Se trata de una gran cueva de piedra caliza de unos 20 m de largo, 6 m de ancho y 12 m de alto , un impresionante espacio natural formado por la erosión del Lesse.

El nombre hace referencia a los Nutones , pequeñas criaturas del folclore de las Ardenas, que se cree que habitan en cuevas. Se les compara con pequeños espíritus de la tierra o ninfas del bosque. Ayudaban con las artesanías por la noche a cambio de comida.
