La ciutat de Sofia, búlgar: София AFI [ˈsɔfijɐ] és la capital i la ciutat més gran de la República de Bulgària. Està localitzada a la regió oest del país i n'és el centre administratiu, cultural i industrial. Amb una població d'1.291.591 habitants el 2011, es tracta de la 14a major ciutat de la Unió Europea, i al voltant d'1.380.406 en la seva àrea metropolitana. Està situada al centre de la península balcànica, a l'oest de Bulgària, envoltada pel mont Vitoixa al sud, la muntanya Liulin a l'oest i les muntanyes dels Balcans al nord. La seva superfície total és de 492 quilòmetres quadrats i la seva mitjana d'altitud és de 600 msnm, la qual cosa la converteix en la quarta capital més alta d'Europa.
