Brocken amb els seus 1.141 m. d'alçada) és el cim més alt de la serralada, i considerada una muntanya sagrada.
En el Harz, una regió rica en mites i llegendes, s'alça una formació rocosa que destaca en el paisatge. El Brocken supera en altitud tots els altres cims de la regió i se'l considera una muntanya sagrada. En el cim no hi ha boscos, que sembla una gepa, i aquesta mancança de vegetació contribueix en gran mesura a donar-li un cert aire de misteri, que es percep ja des de la llunyania.
