La plaça es va inaugurar el juliol del 2005 en honor a l'agermanament de la ciutat amb la ciutat balneària txeca de Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad).
Durant el Weinfest der Mittelmosel , el festival vinícola més gran de la regió, Karlsbader Platz és un dels llocs centrals. La plaça ofereix espai per a llocs de vi i actuacions de música en viu, convertint-la en un animat punt de trobada tant per a locals com per a turistes.
Al centre de la plaça hi ha el Karlsbader Brunnen , una obra d'art de l'artista txec Jan Kotek .
