Het plein werd in juli 2005 geopend ter ere van de stedenband met de Tsjechische kuurstad Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad).
Tijdens het jaarlijkse Weinfest der Mittelmosel, het grootste wijnfeest van de regio, is de Karlsbader Platz een van de centrale locaties. Het plein biedt ruimte aan wijnstands en live muziekoptredens, waardoor het een levendige ontmoetingsplek is voor zowel locals als toeristen.
Centraal op het plein staat de Karlsbader Brunnen, een kunstwerk van de Tsjechische kunstenaar Jan Kotek.
