The square was opened in July 2005 in honour of the town's twinning with the Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad).
During the annual Weinfest der Mittelmosel , the largest wine festival in the region, Karlsbader Platz is one of the central locations. The square offers space for wine stands and live music performances, making it a lively meeting place for locals and tourists alike.
In the centre of the square is the Karlsbader Brunnen , a work of art by the Czech artist Jan Kotek .
