La República d'Estònia és un estat de l'Europa del Nord, constituït per una porció continental i un gran arxipèlag al mar Bàltic. Limita amb el mar Bàltic a l'oest i amb el golf de Finlàndia al nord, al sud amb l'estat bàltic germà, Letònia, i amb Rússia a l'est. Té poc més d'un milió tres-cents mil habitants, distribuïts en 45 mil quilòmetres quadrats. Estònia és membre de la Unió Europea des de l'1 de maig del 2004 i de l'OTAN des del 29 de març del 2004. Estònia és el país on viuen la majoria dels estonians, que són les persones del grup ètnic que viuen o són procedents d'Estònia.
Els estonians són un poble baltofinès íntimament i ètnica connectat als finesos i als lapons. El país té lligams culturals i històrics amb els països nòrdics, particularment amb Finlàndia, Suècia i Dinamarca.
