Està situat a l'extrem meridional del pla de Bages, en una elevació que domina la confluència dels rius llobregat i cardener, al nord-oest dels contraforts del massís de Montserrat a Castellgalí es produeix l'aiguabarreig del Cardener i el Llobregat. El pic més alt de Castellgalí es el Talló amb 443 metres d'alçada. El terme és drenat també per la riera de Guardiola, que fa de límit amb el terme de Manresa i afluent del Cardener per la dreta. Mentre que la riera de Castellet flueix pel sud del muncicipi abans d'anar cap a Sant Vicenç de Castellet i més endavant desembocar al Llobregat.
