El Montmell és un municipi de la comarca del Baix Penedès, amb capital a la Joncosa del Montmell. El 1989 va canviar el nom afegint l'article a Montmell. El 17 d'abril de l'any 974 el bisbe de Barcelona Vives va signar la seva carta de població.
Segons les dades de l'últim trimestre de 2019 de l'Observatori del Treball de la Generalitat, el Montmell era el tercer municipi amb la taxa més alta de desocupats de Catalunya, un 29,58%, per darrera de La Vajol , amb un 34,15%, i Querol , amb un 32,67%, i seguit de Savallà del Comtat , amb un 26,67%. En el rànquing dels deu municipis catalans amb més atur, els deu primers tenien menys de 600 habitants, a excepció del Montmell, en tercer lloc , i Santa Oliva , en desè .
