Cenicero és un municipi de la Rioja, a la regió de la Rioja Mitjana. Limita al nord amb el riu Ebre, a l'oest amb el riu Najerilla, amb Huércanos i Uruñuela al sud i amb Fuenmayor i Navarrete a l'est.
Hi ha dues teories que pugnen per explicar l'origen del nom de Cenicero, la primera d'elles defensa la tesi que aquest nom ve de les cendres que deixaven els pastors en la seva estada hivernal per la zona. L'altra, defensa la hipòtesi que el nom de Cinassariam es deu a les cendres que sobraven al realitzar el carbó vegetal d'alzina i carrasca que abundaven en la zona.
