Legazpi és un municipi de Guipúscoa , de la comarca de l'Alt Urola. Limita al nord amb Antzuola, Urretxu i Zumarraga, a l'est amb Oñati, al sud amb Zegama i la Parzoneria d'Alzania i amb Zerain, Mutiloa i Gabiria a l'est.
A l'hora d'abordar el significat etimològic de Legazpi, tots els filòlegs coincideixen a reconèixer la presència de la paraula basca "azpi", que significa "sota" o "part inferior", segons s'utilitzi com a adverbi o com a substantiu. Tanmateix, no hi ha acord per al principi del nom. S'han proposat les següents etimologies, totes elles basades en el basc: "Legats" o "Legartz" = terra pedrerosa , "Legatz" = lluç , "Leku" = lloc .
