L'Estany és un poble, cap del municipi del seu nom, pertanyent a la comarca del Moianès des de la creació d'aquesta el 2015. Abans estava adscrit a la comarca del Bages.
És al nord del centre de la comarca del Moianès, al límit amb Osona pel costat nord-est. Eclesiàsticament pertany al Bisbat de Vic, dins de l'arxiprestat del Moianès, i al partit judicial de Manresa, ciutat de la qual depèn des del punt de vista de l'Administració d'Hisenda i del registre de la propietat.
