Vic és la capital de la comarca d'Osona, al nord-est de Catalunya. És una de les capitals de comarca de la Catalunya interior. La seva població és de 46.214 habitants , segons Idescat.
El nom d'aquest municipi es va escriure durant segles amb la forma Vich, segons la grafia tradicional. D'ençà de la primeria dels anys 80, la forma oficial és "Vic", en aplicació de les Normes ortogràfiques de l'Institut d'Estudis Catalans. La grafia amb "h" final es manté en el cognom Vich, i també és la que té la població homònima d'Arpitània.
