Es va formar durant l'Era terciària, fruit del moviment orogènic alpí. S'estén 400 km al nord d'Andalusia i en direcció est a oest, de la Sierra de Alcaraz fins a la frontera amb Portugal. El seu pic més alt és Bañuelo . La vegetació principal és el roure i els arbres de castanya. La serralada també és rica en una gran varietat de minerals, com ara el coure, el plom i el carbó. Comprèn diverses serres: la Sierra Madrona, la Sierra de Aracena, la Serra Norte de Sevilla, la Sierra de Horanchuelos, la Sierra de Córdoba i la Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro entre altres.
