La plaça de Mina té un valor històric i artístic excepcional.
Es troba a l' antic hort del Convent de San Francisco, fundat l'any 1838. Inicialment es van traçar dos carrers arbrats, i el 1861 els jardins interiors amb un quiosc de música. El 1897 es va reformar de nou. Alberga el Museu de Cadis , entre altres palaus notables de Cadis.
En algun moment es va decidir aixecar una estàtua del general Espoz y Mina , heroi de la Guerra de la Independència, avui desaparegut. El nom de la plaça prové d'aquest general.
Després del Parc Genovés, la plaça de Mina és considerada un dels racons més rics de la ciutat pel que fa a espècies arbòries.
