Aquesta robusta torre defensiva va ser construïda el 1520 pels monjos de l'Abadia de Lérins (a l'illa de Saint-Honorat, prop de Cannes).
En aquella època, posseïen extenses terres a la regió i volien protegir els seus interessos de pirates i altres forces hostils. La torre va servir com a defensa costanera contra els atacs dels pirates bàrbars que assaltaven regularment la costa del sud de França al segle XVI.
Avui dia, la Tour Carrée acull un museu d'història i folklore local , amb exposicions permanents sobre les tradicions locals, la pesca i el propi poble.
La plataforma de la torre ofereix una magnífica vista panoràmica del port, la ciutat i el golf de Saint-Tropez.
