Calcis era una ciutat de l'illa d'Eubea, separada de Beòcia per l'estret d'Eurip. Avui ha recuperat aquest nom . A l'edat mitjana va portar el nom d'Euripos que es va deformar a Egripo.
La llegenda diu que es va fundar abans de la guerra de Troia per colons jonis procedents de l'Àtica dirigits per Pandoros, fill d'Erecteu, segons diuen Estrabó i Escimne de Quios. Homer la menciona al «Catàleg de les naus» a la Ilíada. Després de la guerra de Troia els atenencs hi van establir una segona colònia.
