La Batalla de Callinicus es va lliurar el 171 aC entre Macedònia i Roma. Els macedonis comandats per Perseu van vèncer el cònsol Publi Licini Cras.
A la mort de Felip de Macedònia el 179 aC, el seu fill Perseu va intentar restaurar la influència internacional de Macedònia, i es va moure agressivament contra els seus veïns. Quan Perseu va ser implicat en un complot d'assassinat contra un aliat de Roma, el Senat va declarar la tercera guerra macedònica.
