S'han trobat algunes restes del Paleolític inferior a Ca' Belvedere di Monte Poggiolo i Castel Bolognese, Rimini, però les primeres troballes certes són de fa uns divuit mil anys a Fornace di San Damiano .
Les troballes del neolític son més abundants especialment del període 6000-3000 aC amb les restes a Fornace Marzocchi del 3500-3000 aC, i a Guado della Fornasaccia del 3200-3000 aC. Vers el 4500 aC es va produir la revolució agrícola a la Romanya; la cultura de Conelle i alguna altre ha deixat restes a Panighina i a Gattolino, Borello.
