La història d'aquest santuari comença el 14 de juny de 1863. El fundador en fou el vicari de Braga, Martinho António Pereira da Silva, natural de Semelhe, que el 1869 va fer col·locar, al cim de la muntanya, una imatge de Nossa Senhora da Conceiçâo. Aquest santuari és un centre de devoció mariana a Portugal, després del Santuari de Fàtima, a la Cova da Iria, i del Santuari da Mâe Soberana, a Loulé.
