Aquest monument va ser erigit en homenatge a Fra Bartolomé dos Màrtirs , fundador de l'antic convent de Santa Cruz (del qual només en queda l'església de Santo Domingo, on van quedar les seves restes). Va ser realitzat el novembre del 2008 per l'escultor Manuel Rocha amb motiu del setè aniversari de la seva beatificació.
El monument mostra el monjo dominic assegut sobre un burro, sobre un pedestal rodó que (amb relleus de bronze) representa les diferents etapes de la seva vida.
El frare és considerat la figura més important de la història de la ciutat per la seva dedicació als pobres i malalts , la seva notable participació al Concili de Trento i la fundació del monestir de la ciutat.
