This monument was erected in tribute to Brother Bartolomé dos Mártires , founder of the old convent of Santa Cruz (of which only the Santo Domingo church remains, where his remains were left). It was made in November 2008 by sculptor Manuel Rocha on the occasion of the seventh anniversary of his beatification.
The monument shows the Dominican monk sitting on a donkey, on a round pedestal which (with bronze reliefs) represents the different stages of his life.
The friar is considered the most important figure in the city's history because of his dedication to the poor and sick , his notable participation in the Council of Trent and the foundation of the city's monastery.
