La Biblioteca Pública de Braga va ser fundada en 1841 per la reina Maria II per protegir les llibreries dels convents desapareguts de la regió, com Falperra, Tibães i Congregats.
Als seus orígens, aquí hi havia la biblioteca. La col·lecció es va ampliar amb el dipòsit legal i, des del 1931, inclou un exemplar de les publicacions editades a Portugal. Al mateix temps, el museu va acollir col·leccions de personalitats i institucions locals, com Manuel Monteiro, Carrington da Costa, Víctor de Sa, Manuel d'Oliveira i l'Institut d'Estudis Regionals del Minhoto, per citar-ne alguns.
El BPB està instal·lat a l'ala barroca del complex Largo do Paço, a la Praça do Município, des del 1934 i es va integrar a la UMinho el 1975.
Hi ha una col·lecció de més de 500.000 documents, entre els quals s'inclouen un fons de 53 incunables (dels primers temps de la impremta) i almenys 400 volums del segle XVI.
