El Bòsfor és un estret que separa la part europea de Turquia de la part asiàtica , i connecta la mar de Màrmara amb la mar Negra. Fa 30 km de llarg, amb una amplada màxima de 3,7 km a la boca nord, i una de mínima de 750 metres entre les fortaleses d'Anadoluhisarı i Rumelihisarı. La fondària varia dels 36 als 124 metres al mig del corrent.
Les costes de l'estret estan molt habitades, ja que la ciutat d'Istanbul s'hi estén a banda i banda.
