San Francisco és una ciutat del nord de Califòrnia, a la costa oest dels Estats Units. Està situada a una península plena de turons que separa la Badia de San Francisco de l'Oceà Pacífic. És la quarta ciutat més poblada de l'estat amb 776.773 habitants, si bé la seva àrea metropolitana supera els 7 milions d'habitants, i és no només de les més importants dels Estats Units sinó del món sencer, on gràcies a l'activitat de Silicon Valley ha estat pionera en la revolució informàtica.
Situada prop de la falla de San Andrés, la ciutat pateix terratrèmols amb certa regularitat, el més important dels quals fou el del 1906 i n'obligà una reconstrucció quasi total.
