Sankt Pölten er den nuværende hovedstad i delstaten Niederøstrig, siden det blev godkendt ved folkeafstemning i 1986. Det er en statsby.
Byen blev grundlagt i det 1. århundrede e.Kr. af romerne, som kaldte den Ælium Cetium. Byen er den yngste af hovedstæderne i den føderale østrigske stat. Det er her, den første kloster i Niederøstrig blev grundlagt i år 791, i karolingerne. Dette kloster var dedikeret til Sankt Hippolyt, hvis navn blev forvandlet til Pölten.
