Det var her i Kärntnertortheater, at Beethoven for første gang præsenterede sin niende symfoni for publikum fredag den 7. maj 1842. Det var en uventet men stor succes. Beethoven insisterede på at stå på scenen ved siden af dirigenten for at angive tempi. Og det var ikke så indlysende, for hvem skulle orkestret ellers kigge på for at følge tempoet. Derudover havde de kun haft 4 dage til at øve stykket.
