Oprindelsen af zoo er fra Europas største fuglepark, Vogelpark Schmiding, som åbnede dørene i 1982, og zooen viser den største gå-igennem voliere i verden.
Zooen inkluderer også et akvarium, der Aquazoo, som er Østrigs største marine akvarium. I 2017 åbnede Det Evolutionære Museum Schmiding ved siden af Aquazoo. Det fuldender den evolutionære tidsrejse, der blev påbegyndt i akvariet, og viser, hvordan mennesker har udviklet sig i løbet af tiden - først fysisk og derefter åndeligt, og hvad fremtiden måtte bringe.
