Den øverste del af Habachtal er et lærebogseksempel på en U-dal. En trogdalen eller U-dal har en U-form og en flad bund med stejle vægge på begge sider. En U-dal opstår, når en flod eller en gletcher eroderer bunden. I en trogdalen er klippen imidlertid for hård i bunden, så der sker næppe nogen vertikal erosion. Den horisontale erosion fortsætter dog. Dette skaber U-formen. En U-dal kan også opstå, fordi en gletcher tager store landområder og sliber dem væk.
