Allerede i det 9. århundrede var der tale om et område Palethe, senere deformeret til Pelt. I begyndelsen af det 13. århundrede var der allerede en opdeling mellem Neerpelt og Overpelt. Sammen med Kaulille og Kleine-Brogel dannede de herligheden Pelt, som var afhængig af grevskabet Loon.
