Selvom den lille by Aywaille kun har lidt over otte tusinde indbyggere, har den en central placering i regionen. Aywaille er også et vigtigt vejknudepunkt: den kaldes nogle gange porten til det liège-ardenske område. Lige i nærheden, på højderne af La Reid eller Heid des Gattes, som i dag er et naturreservat, udkæmpede østrigere og franskmænd i 1794 en af deres mange slag.
