Although the small town of Aywaille has just over eight thousand inhabitants, it holds a central position in the region. Aywaille is also an important road junction: it is sometimes referred to as the gateway to the Liège Ardennes. Not far from there, on the heights of La Reid or the Heid des Gattes, now a nature reserve, Austrians and French fought one of their many battles in 1794.
