I 1994 blev det 2. Regiment Gidsen, et Leopard - tankbataljon fra Altenrath i Tyskland, sammen med mange andre enheder opløst. Der opstod så et problem med at bevare den rige arv fra dette berømte Kavaleriregiment, der blev grundlagt i 1874. Kommunen Zelzate tilbød at give denne arv et hjem. Kommunen var nemlig regimentet taknemmelig for de store offer, enheden havde bragt ved forsvaret af Zelzate under den 18-dages felttog i maj 1940. Museet hylder på passende måde den rige fortid af regimentet i tre museumsale.
