Under første verdenskrig blev hele området vest for Ijzer og øst for den nationale vej Diksmuide - De Panne oversvømmet. Ved at åbne sluserne i Ijzer flød dette område helt med havvand ved højvande. I Ijzertårnet kan du se et kort, der viser, hvor stort dette oversvømmelsesområde var. Kommunens område i Stuivekenskerk var derfor næsten helt oversvømmet. Denne oversvømmelse førte til et vendepunkt i første verdenskrig.
