Tijdens WO I werd het gehele gebied ten westen van de IJzer en ten oosten van de nationale weg Diksmuide - De Panne onder water gezet. Door de sluizen open te zetten van de IJzer stroomde bij hoogtij dit gebied volledig onder met zeewater. In de IJzertoren kan je een kaart gaan bekijken die aangeeft hoe uitgestrekt dit overstromingsgebied was. Het grondgebied van de gemeente Stuivekenskerk was dus bijna volledig overstroomd. Deze overstroming zorgde voor een kentering in WO I.
