Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, toute la région à l'ouest de l'Yser et à l'est de la route nationale Diksmuide - De Panne a été inondée. En ouvrant les écluses de l'Yser, cette zone a été totalement submergée par l'eau de mer à marée haute. Dans la tour de l'Yser, vous pouvez consulter une carte qui montre l'étendue de cette zone d'inondation. Le territoire de la commune de Stuivekenskerk a donc été presque entièrement inondé. Cette inondation a entraîné un tournant dans la Première Guerre mondiale.
