Den tredje uge i januar er der i Essene fejring af Sankt Antonius. Traditionelt kom bønderne til kirken den 17. januar, Sankt Antonius af Egyptens navn, for at ære helgenen og bede om hans velsignelser for at beskytte deres svin mod pesten og den såkaldte 'coud vier' (koldt ild). Det sidste var en ofte dødelig betændelse i svinenes ben. I forbindelse med fejringen bragte bønderne et svinekæb med. Vinteren var jo den sæson, hvor svinene blev slagtet, da man endnu ikke havde moderne køleudstyr.
