La troisième semaine de janvier, il y a à Essene la célébration de Saint-Antoine. Traditionnellement, les agriculteurs se réunissaient à l'église le 17 janvier, jour de la Saint-Antoine d'Égypte, pour honorer le saint et implorer ses faveurs afin de protéger leurs cochons de la peste et du fameux 'coud vier' (feu froid). Ce dernier était une inflammation souvent mortelle aux pattes des porcs. À l'occasion de la célébration, les agriculteurs apportaient une tête de cochon. L'hiver était en effet la saison où les porcs étaient abattus, à une époque où l'on ne disposait pas encore d'équipements de réfrigération modernes.
